This poster uses type to visualize the story of a mythical creature called the Mountain Hui. The story describes this creature as resembling “a dog with a human head”, its appearance so swift that it foretells the coming of typhoons. My approach to this design focused on abstracting the creature into a form that described its swift, jumping movements as well as its presence to foreshadow the coming of a typhoon. I used orange against a blue background to highlight the creature moving across the image space. Shapes and letter forms also swirl around and behind the orange shape, symbolizing the motions of a typhoon. I enjoy using handmade elements alongside digital elements in my work, so to give texture and visual interest to the shape representing my creature, I painted the shape with acrylic paint and scanned it into the computer.
